We Drove the Genesis Electrified GV70 SUV

On the Road

Our experience behind the wheel of the Electrified GV70 frequently led us to draw parallels with its gas-fueled counterpart, the GV70. But not just any model – specifically, the one outfitted with the potent twin-turbocharged V6 engine.

Both the V6 and the electric version impress with their swift initial acceleration. However, the real standout feature of the electric GV70 is the immediate torque you get from engaging the accelerator. Just floor it and the resultant surge is powerful – a head-jerking sensation reminiscent of sports car dynamics. Moreover, on the highway, this electric vehicle shows exceptional passing speed, making it a delight to operate.

Give it a Boost

One of the coolest features is the ‘boost’ button located at the base of the steering wheel. A quick press while on the move and it unleashes a staggering 483 horsepower for a full 10 seconds. This burst of power enables you to easily overtake nearly anything else on the road. However, beware; if you’re not vigilant, you might unwittingly exceed the speed limit and find yourself in the unwelcome company of flashing blue lights. We found it most fun to experiment with this button at lower speeds, like entering a relatively quiet freeway.

The vehicle offers various driving modes – Comfort, Eco, Sport, and a customizable option. If preserving battery life is a priority, Eco is your go-to mode, although you’ll likely find yourself in Normal mode mostly. Opt for Sport mode and the adjustments made to the suspension system impart a more engaging drive. We wouldn’t go as far as to equate the sensation with that of a sports SUV, but it does contribute to a heavier steering feel and a slightly aggressive demeanor. What stands out prominently, irrespective of whether you’re driving the electric or gas variant, is the plush ride this SUV offers.

Key Takeaways

Like the Electrified G80, the Electrified GV70 is built on the same platform as its gasoline-powered counterpart. Conversely, the compact GV60 SUV is constructed entirely on a purpose-built all-electric platform. Worth noting is that both the GV60 and GV70 utilize the same electric drive system. This system proves more efficient in the GV60, largely due to its reduced weight.

Potential buyers of the GV70 should be aware that this vehicle is only available in a limited number of states. Thus, its availability is restricted. We advise collaborating with your local dealer to locate one. The starting price is considerably higher than the standard gas-only model, but it’s most aptly compared with the twin-turbocharged V6 version. Considering the potential $7,500 federal tax credit, the price gap diminishes considerably, with additional savings realized from lower running costs due to electricity being cheaper than gasoline.
