The Toyota Land Cruiser is back for 2024 after a brief hiatus, returning with a blend of modern technology and rugged off-road capability. Known for its durability, the Land Cruiser continues to hold its place as one of the most capable SUVs in the world. Let’s examine what the new version has to offer.
Toyota Land Cruiser Overview
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser starts at around $55,000, which is up to $30,000 less than the previous model. Notably, this new version is based on the Land Cruiser Prado, a smaller variant compared to what most Americans are used to. This change brings the North American Land Cruiser in line with the version recognized in global markets.
Further, Toyota’s strategy positions the Land Cruiser competitively among other rugged off-road vehicles while maintaining its legendary quality. Multiple trims are available, each offering a range of features aimed at different needs, from off-road enthusiasts to those seeking more luxury and convenience. Indeed, special edition or well-equipped models may set you back by just over $70,000.
Exterior Design
The new Land Cruiser takes on a more boxy, retro-inspired design that harks back to the early models. It is muscular and utilitarian, with squared-off fenders and an upright grille. LED headlights come standard, and higher trims offer additional exterior enhancements such as larger wheels and roof rails. The design serves both form and function, giving the Land Cruiser an unmistakable presence on the road and trail.
Interior Highlights
Inside, the Land Cruiser balances ruggedness with modern comfort. The materials are durable but refined, featuring soft-touch surfaces with an available rubberized layer designed to withstand tough conditions. Fabric-trimmed seats are standard, with Softex (imitation leather) available. There are leather options too.
Seating is spacious for both front and rear passengers, but unlike the previous model, the 2024 Land Cruiser no longer includes a third row. It now seats five comfortably across two rows. As for the driver’s seat, it is power operated with lumbar support. We found very good support for the hips and legs. The backing is average – this is where lumbar support is helpful. Notably, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel come standard. Ventilated front seats are available.
The interior is very much utilitarian looking, designed to evoke an SUV vibe. Nevertheless, it isn’t short on modern conveniences, including storage compartments, 12 drink holders, and an available power moonroof with a sunshade.
Technology Features
The 2024 Land Cruiser comes equipped with a practical and straightforward infotainment system. Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system. The system also provides six USB ports, a smart key, and remote start.
For those opting for higher trims, the technology gets an upgrade. Available features include a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 14-speaker JBL premium audio system. Wireless device charging is also offered. A 2,400-watt AC inverter with a household-style outlet adds even more utility for powering larger devices.
Although the Land Cruiser’s infotainment system isn’t as advanced as some competitors, it delivers a solid performance on essential functions. The clear icons and responsive touchscreens make it easy to navigate, without overwhelming users with excessive menus. This simplicity ensures a seamless tech experience focused on functionality.
Safety Highlights
The 2024 Land Cruiser comes equipped with an impressive range of safety features under Toyota’s Safety Sense suite. Standard technologies include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.
For those seeking additional tech enhancements, optional features like a 360-degree camera and off-road navigation further expand the Land Cruiser’s capabilities, providing extra confidence both on the road and in challenging terrains.
Engine and Transmission
The 2024 Land Cruiser blends robust performance with modern efficiency by incorporating a hybrid powertrain. Under the hood, it features a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 326 horsepower and an impressive 465 pound-feet of torque. This setup is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, ensuring smooth and responsive shifts. The hybrid system not only boosts power but also improves fuel efficiency, making the Land Cruiser a more eco-conscious choice without compromising its capability.
Four-wheel drive comes standard on all models, reinforcing the Land Cruiser’s reputation for exceptional off-road prowess. A locking center differential enhances its traction in tricky conditions, while selectable off-road modes allow the driver to fine-tune performance based on terrain, including options for sand, mud, or snow.
Driving Impressions
The hybrid arrangement is a fresh, if not radical reimagination of how the Land Cruiser operates. Gone is the V8…not even a V6 was considered.
With just four cylinders at the ready, it might seem that the new Land Cruiser is a step down from the previous model. It isn’t. Instead, the combination of a hybrid system with turbocharging delivers a fascinating powertrain.
Around town, the Land Cruiser moves with ease. It is quiet, well-mannered, and efficient. But when additional power is needed, this model doesn’t hold back. Indeed, take the Land Cruiser on the highway and its power capabilities shine.
Electric Motor
Notably, the electric motor is located within the bell housing, between the engine and the transmission. This enables the hybrid system to deliver copious amounts of power, while retaining some efficiencies. No, it won’t rival the Prius in efficiency for its class, but it does deliver a power choice like the Toyota Sequoia, the brand’s full-size hybrid-only SUV.
Inasmuch that the Land Cruiser offers excellent on-road capabilities, it still shines strongly off-road. We couldn’t take it to an off-road course to test, but we did visit our favorite gravel road expanse. There, the Toyota proved itself, offering excellent grip and control.
Since this is a standard four-wheel drive model, drivers have a choice between 4Hi and 4Lo, the latter used to pull out of muddy places. At the foot of one gravelly hill, we switched to 4Lo, activated the crawl control switch, took our foot off the gas pedal, and let the Land Cruiser climb. Its ascendancy was slow and steady, a five-minute journey that ended at the top of the hill.
In many cases, you don’t need to activate crawl control, as the Land Cruiser will still move forward in 4Lo. At this point, you’re traveling at speeds below 5 mph, with the Toyota moving forward foot by foot. If you get stuck, simply lock the rear differential and this SUV works free. Again, crawl control is your friend as it automatically frees this SUV from the toughest spots.
Competitive Set
The 2024 Land Cruiser competes directly with other off-road-oriented SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender, and Ford Bronco. While the Jeep and Bronco offer more customization and arguably better on-road manners, the Land Cruiser excels in reliability and long-term durability. The Land Rover Defender matches it in off-road prowess but comes at a higher price point and with less focus on long-term toughness.
Parting Thoughts: New Land Cruiser
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser stays true to its heritage with excellent off-road capability, durable design, and a reliable powertrain. It is surprisingly quick when it needs to be, offers a comfortable though truck-like ride, and maintains a high-level of quality matching its name. An all-new 4Runner debuts for 2025, giving Toyota a solid 1-2 punch in the midsize off-road utility segment.
