Strong Fourth Quarter Propels Ford Sales

In 2023, Ford continued to expand its range of vehicles, affirming its leadership in the gas vehicle market with its top-selling trucks and vans, while also seeing a surge in electric and hybrid vehicle sales. The result was a sales increase for Ford, enabling this automaker to increase its presence in several segments.

Strong Electric Vehicle Sales

Ford’s electric vehicles (EVs) experienced a significant boost, with record sales in the fourth quarter and throughout the year. The company sold 25,937 EVs in the fourth quarter, a 24 percent increase from the third quarter, and a total of 72,608 vehicles for the year, marking an 18 percent increase. This growth was propelled by the F-150 Lightning, which saw a 74 percent increase in Q4, and the Mustang Mach-E, which had its best sales year since its launch in 2021 with 40,771 vehicles sold.

The E-Transit emerged as America’s top-selling electric van nameplate with 7,672 units sold in 2023, an 18 percent increase from the previous year. Ford’s commitment to a diverse range of vehicles, including gas, electric, and hybrid options, was a key factor in their growth, as noted by Jim Farley, Ford’s president and CEO.

Ford also saw record sales in its hybrid vehicles, particularly in the fourth quarter, with 37,229 vehicles sold – a 55 percent increase. The year’s total hybrid sales were up 25 percent. The Maverick Hybrid and F-150 Hybrid trucks led the way in the hybrid truck market, with the Maverick Hybrid comprising more than half of Maverick’s total sales.

Ford Registers a Year-Over-Year Sales Increase

Overall, Ford’s 2023 sales totaled 1,995,912 vehicles, a 7.1 percent increase over 2022 and the best since 2020.

Ford’s F-Series maintained its long-standing position as America’s best-selling truck for the 47th consecutive year and the best-selling vehicle for the 42nd year. The F-150 Lightning and F-150 Hybrid also achieved record sales, contributing to Ford’s overall growth in truck sales.

Robust Utility Vehicle Sales

SUV sales for Ford and Lincoln were also strong, with notable increases in the Bronco Family, Edge, and Expedition models. The Lincoln Navigator saw a significant sales increase of 33 percent, and Lincoln SUVs overall closed the quarter up 9 percent, boosted by increases in Aviator and Nautilus sales.

In the commercial sector, Ford’s Transit van continued its dominance as America’s best-selling commercial van for the 45th consecutive year, with sales up 21 percent in 2023. Transit and E-Series vans both saw notable sales increases.
