12 Toyota Sequoia Attributes (Including 3 Needing Improvement)

7. Limited Cargo Space

The Sequoia’s cargo area is relatively smaller compared to its full-size SUV competitors. It offers 11.7 to 22.3 cubic feet behind the third-row seats, expandable to 49 cubic feet with the seats folded, and a maximum of 86.9 cubic feet with both second and third rows folded. While it may require some compromise for larger items, it still provides sufficient space for everyday hauling needs.

8. Three-Row Seating for Eight

The 2023 Sequoia is a three-row SUV with seating for eight passengers. The front seats offer excellent cushioning and support, while the second-row seats provide generous space. However, the third row is better suited for children, with limited headroom and legroom for adults. You can also swap out the middle-row bench seat for a pair of comfortable captain’s chairs.

9. Potent Hybrid Drivetrain

The 2023 Sequoia features Toyota’s new i-Force Max hybrid system, combining a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, an electric motor, a 1.87-kWh battery pack, and a 10-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain delivers impressive performance (437 horsepower; 583 pound-feet of torque), smooth acceleration, and ample power for towing.

10. Competitive Fuel Economy

The Sequoia is estimated to achieve 21 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway (22 mpg combined), positioning it as one of the more fuel-efficient options in its class, considering its size and towing capabilities.

11. Off-Road Capability

The new Sequoia boasts notable off-road prowess, especially in the TRD Pro trim. Its suspension articulation, four-wheel-drive system, and off-road equipment enable it to handle challenging conditions. However, its ground clearance is slightly limited compared to more rugged models like the Toyota 4Runner.

12. Impressive Towing Capacity

The Sequoia has a maximum towing capacity of 8,980 to 9,520 pounds, surpassing most of its full-size SUV competitors. This capability makes it suitable for towing boats, RVs, or cargo trailers.

Five Grades to Consider

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia offers five trim levels: SR5 ($58,365), Limited ($64,765), Platinum ($70,965), TRD Pro ($76,065), and Capstone ($75,365). Except for the TRD Pro, all trims come with rear-wheel drive as standard and offer the option to upgrade to four-wheel drive for an additional $3,000. The prices mentioned do not include the $1,595 delivery, processing, and handling charge.

Toyota Sequoia: Standing Tall

We believe the 2023 Toyota Sequoia will gladden the hearts of Toyota faithful as it delivers a modern design and a strong powertrain. The competition, though, is fierce and includes models from Chevrolet (Tahoe and Suburban, GMC (Yukon/XL), Ford (Expedition), Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer), and Nissan (Armada). We doubt Toyota will develop an extended wheelbase version, which would rectify the small cargo space and tight third row challenges. Optionally, the all-new Toyota Grand Highlander crossover may prove the better choice for supplying optimum cabin room and storage space.
