Dirt bike fun is awesome, but are you adequately insured?

If you have made the decision to buy a dirt bike, the chances are probably pretty good that you have done considerable research into what you want to get and what it will end up costing you. And why not? A dirt bike isn’t the biggest expense in the world, but it’s not cheap either.

It doesn’t take knowing a lot about dirt bikes to know that there can be a number of important expenses related to them. There’s routine maintenance, replacement parts, accessories such as goggles, and more. But one expense that isn’t usually at the top of most owner’s lists is insurance. This article will give you a few things to think about when buying insurance for a dirt bike.

What Does the Law Say?

It’s an unfortunate fact of life that many people who own motor vehicles, whether they be cars, trucks, or dirt bikes, go without insurance. Whether this is due to the cost or that old feeling that “An accident will never happen to me,” some people simply don’t buy insurance. This is a serious mistake.

The primary reason for this is that the law requires that anyone who drives a motor vehicle of any type is required to own insurance. The amount of coverage differs by state, but the requirement to own various levels of insurance is the same. Further, the different types of insurance can also be determined by individual circumstances and the owner’s preferences.

Why Own Insurance?

It’s an immutable fact of life that many people don’t own insurance simply because they don’t think they need it, especially in cases where a vehicle such as a dirt bike is not on the public roads. Again, this is a serious mistake since just as in the case of any other type of vehicle, accidents happen. In fact, perhaps more than other types of vehicles, not only do dirt bikes get involved in accidents, they also incur liability outside of what normal motorcycles do.

Another reason that dirt bikes need insurance is that even though they are not street legal, they still need coverage for when they are transported from one location to another.  Further, dirt bikes are often damaged or vandalized even when they are sitting in a garage, the result of fire, theft, and other issues.

Dirt Bike Insurance Customization

Once insurance for a dirt bike has been decided on, most owners opt to customize their coverage due to the specifics of their use. For example, if a dirt bike spends most of its time when not in use in a garage or other storage facility, it would be appropriate for an owner to have coverage of that circumstance.

Anyone who has ever shopped for insurance is well aware that the cost of coverage varies dramatically. These differences vary by state, and even by areas within a given state. Further, the rates an owner will pay for their coverage depends on the appropriate protection. Otherwise, dirt bike insurance runs about the same as motorcycle insurance, with differences accounting for not being run on public streets, storage, accessories, and more.

When it comes time to cover your dirt bike, be prepared to shop around. The time and money you save will be your own.
