The Ford Edge is a midsize, two-row crossover SUV that offers a balance of comfort, performance, and technology. Introduced in 2007 and continuing through 2023, the Edge became a key player in Ford’s SUV lineup. The Edge slots between the compact Ford Escape and the larger, three-row Ford Explorer, providing spacious seating for five passengers and a versatile cargo area. It shares its underpinnings with several models, including the Lincoln MKX, later renamed the Nautilus, and evolved through two generations with significant updates.
The Edge was designed to offer a stylish alternative to minivans and traditional SUVs, appealing to families and individuals seeking versatility with a sporty nuance. While Ford had experimented with lifted wagons like the Taurus X, the Edge was a true crossover with a sleek profile and modern technology.

Introducing the 2007 Ford Edge
In 2007, Ford introduced the Edge. The original Ford Edge featured a striking exterior design that set it apart from its competitors. Under the hood, it has a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 265 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This model comes with standard front-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive.
Inside, the Edge delivers spacious seating for five passengers, with features like a telescoping steering wheel and reclining rear seats. The functional design provides ample passenger room in both the front and rear seats. Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, stability control with rollover avoidance logic, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags.
The 2007 Edge comes in three trims: SE, SEL, and SEL Plus. The base SE features 17-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, automatic headlights, air conditioning, a four-speaker CD stereo with an MP3 player jack, and full power accessories. The SEL trim adds body-color door handles and mirrors, fog lamps, metallic interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power driver seat, an in-dash CD changer, a trip computer, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The top-tier SEL Plus showcases heated outside mirrors, leather upholstery, heated front seat, driver-seat memory, a fold-flat power passenger seat, a quick-release mechanism for the folding rear seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

The End of an Era
Ford’s discontinuance of the Edge seems surprising, especially as competitors entered the fray. When introduced, the Nissan Murano was its main competitor. Today, models such as the Chevrolet Blazer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Sorento, Honda Passport, and Hyundai Santa Fe remain.
As for the Ford Edge, its 17-year model run spanning two generations, played an important part in the company’s SUV expansion. Today, the Ford Explorer along with the all-electric Ford Mustang E-Mach takes aim at Edge owners. They are two very different vehicles but may satisfy customers desiring a contemporary crossover SUV.
