By the Numbers: 2022 Chevrolet Suburban

When the Chevrolet Suburban debuted for the 1935 model year, it is doubtful that anyone thought this model would last for generations. At that time, the “Suburban” name was utilized by multiple manufacturers, describing a wagon-like utility vehicle. Indeed, GMC shared the Suburban name for decades, before adopting the Yukon naming convention by the new millennium.

Today, the Chevrolet Suburban is in its twelfth generation. This full-size, extended-wheelbase model is complemented by the standard wheelbase Chevrolet Tahoe. Combined, the duo leads the market, outdistancing the Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, and the Toyota Sequoia in the process.

We think the Suburban is worth considering for any family needing space for up to nine, excellent cargo room, and strong trailering capabilities. To that end, we will look at the “by the numbers” feature of this large SUV.

Highlights of the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban

Chevrolet could have gotten by with one engine choice and called it a day. Fortunately, customers have three engines to consider.

The first engine choice is a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The second engine twice is a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The first engine is standard; the upgraded V8 is available everywhere else.

The third engine is a 3.0-liter inline-6-cylinder turbodiesel. This motor makes 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All three engines route power to the rear or to all four wheels utilizing a 10-speed automatic transmission.

How does the Chevrolet Suburban trim walk go? Quite nicely, actually. The 2022 Suburban comes in six trims. These are: LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country.

Prices range from just under $55,000 (with the destination charge) to nearly $90,000 with a fully equipped High Country edition. We believe that a well-equipped model can be had for under $70,000.

Outside of passenger vans, there are few vehicles that offer space for more than seven individuals. Some minivans seat eight as do a few crossovers.

The Chevrolet Suburban is an exception as it seats up to nine individuals. However, that is reserved for the base model only and when a customer opts for nine-passenger seating. In this case, the front bucket seats are exchanged for a split-folding front bench. Otherwise, most trims seat eight with the top trims seating seven.

10.2

Every trim comes with a 10.2-inch diagonal HD color touch-screen infotainment system display. That is an improvement over the previous 8-inch color display. The usual complement of tech features are included. This list is not limited to Bluetooth, multiple USB ports, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi.

The audio systems range from six to 12 speakers. A rear-seat entertainment system is available. A pair of 115-volt power outlets are included.

Customers will find wheel choices ranging from 18 inches for the standard model to 22 inches for the High Country. In between, there are select 20-inch wheel choices available.

Bright painted and silver-painted wheel choices are a common theme to this model. Black-painted and machined aluminum wheels are available.

144.7

Passenger space has improved since the last model, resulting in more legroom for the second and third-row seating areas.

As for cargo space, there are 41.5 cubic feet behind the third-row seat. With the third-row seat folded, that number comes to 93.8 cubic feet. Fold-down both the second and third rows and this Chevrolet offers 144.7 cubic feet of cargo space. These are outstanding numbers all around.

8,300

The maximum tow rating of the Chevrolet Suburban is 8300 pounds. Choose the standard V8 engine and the weight rating ranges from 7,600 to 8,300 pounds. Move up to the large V8 and this one sees a slight drop with a range of 7,400 to 8,200 pounds. The modest diesel offers a surprising 7,800 to 8,000-pound tow rating.

Some of the top-tier numbers are reached by opting for the Max Trailer Package. That said, the package offers no more than an additional 500 pounds of towing capacity on certain engines. As for payload, that range is 1,684 to 1,884 pounds, depending on the engine and drivetrain configuration.

100,000

Chevrolet offers multiple warranties under it’s “new vehicle limited warranty” label. All five warranties or plans are offered on year or mileage limit, whichever comes first.

The bumper-to-bumper limited warranty is good for three years or 36,000 miles. The rust-through protection warranty is in place for six years or 100,000 miles. The powertrain limited warranty is for five years or 60,000 miles. The diesel limited warranty offers coverage for five years or 100,000 miles. Finally, roadside assistance and courtesy transportation is offered for five years or 60,000 miles.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Considerations

The Suburban’s legacy aside, this utility vehicle delivers the goods. It meets a need for large families while offering strong payload and towing numbers. It is also popular with fleets. Indeed, it is the favorite of the Secret Service and other government entities.
