Honda’s lineup of utility vehicles includes the HR-V, CR-V, Passport, and Pilot. The Honda HR-V rolled out in 2016 and originally shared its underpinnings with the Fit subcompact hatchback.
The Honda Fit has departed, therefore, to keep the HR-V going, the company had to come up with a new strategy. Commencing in 2023, the second-generation HR-V shares its architecture with the larger CR-V, although its overall dimensions are modestly smaller.
2023 Honda HR-V Overview
The 2023 Honda HR-V comes with standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. This model seats five and supplies one powertrain combination.
Priced from $24,895 to $30,195, plus a $1,245 delivery charge, the HR-V occupies one of the fastest-growing segments. Its main competitors include the Toyota Corolla Cross, Nissan Kicks, Chevrolet Trax, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, and the Subaru Crosstrek.
Standard and Available Equipment
Honda offers the 2023 HR-V in three grades, LX, Sport, and EX-L. Add $1,500 for all-wheel drive.
Exterior and Interior Highlights
All grades come with automatic LED headlights, LED brake lights, power side windows, and a rear roofline spoiler. The Sport grade adds a sport grille, a chrome exhaust finisher, rear privacy glass, and keyless entry with an automatic lock. Move up to the EX-L and this grade features a power moonroof with a tilt feature, along with front and rear parking sensors.
As for the tires and wheels, all-season rubber comes standard. The base model has 17-inch painted alloy wheels. The Sport comes with 18-inch gloss black alloys. The EX-L is equipped with 17-inch machine-finished alloys.
Inside, the Honda HR-V has full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, and automatic climate control. Cloth seats are included. Beginning with the Sport grade, this model comes with illuminated vanity mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and heated seats. Ambient LED lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-way power driver’s seat, and leather-trimmed seats are included with the EX-L grade.
Tech and Safety Equipment
A four-speaker audio system with a 7-inch touch-screen display is standard with the 2023 HR-V. Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are included.
The Sport grade adds a 6-speaker audio system. Move up the EX-L and this model has an 8-speaker audio package and a 9-inch touch-screen display. Satellite Radio, HD Radio, and wireless device charging are included with the EX-L.
On the safety front, the 2023 HR-V features a long list of standard equipment. These include automatic high-beam headlights, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control. The Sport grade adds blind-spot monitoring. The EX-L has low-speed braking control.
Honda HR-V Powertrain
Honda supplies just one powertrain choice, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. This engine works with a continuously variable transmission to shuttle power to the front or to all four wheels.
The 2023 HR-V earns an estimated 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway for a combined 28 mpg. Choose all-wheel drive and those numbers fall somewhat to 25/30/27 mpg city/highway/combined.
Honda HR-V Considerations
The Honda HR-V has built a stellar reputation, one that aligns with this manufacturer’s other models. The HR-V, now larger, presents one of the roomiest interiors in the segment. With a fully-equipped model costing about $30,000, Honda has all the elements most buyers prefer in an attractive package. We recommend starting with the Sport trim, then selecting all-wheel drive if you live where ice and snow are common.
