By the Numbers: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize, sport utility vehicle, one of the most popular models in its segment. Now in its thirtieth year and fifth-generation, the Grand Cherokee solidifies its position with an extended-wheelbase variant. With this in mind, let’s take a “by the numbers” approach to what makes this Jeep a leader in a highly competitive segment.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Highlights


2 – Beginning in 2021, the Grand Cherokee became two models with the introduction of the Grand Cherokee L. Namely, the “L” stands for long or a three-row version that adds five inches between the wheels and 9.4 inches over longer than the standard-wheelbase model. Notably, 2021 was also the last year for the previous-generation two-row model and the first year for the long-wheelbase version. For 2022, both models are based on a fifth-generation architecture.

3 – Some of the competing models in this segment have just one powertrain choice. On the other hand, the Grand Cherokee offers three engines, including a plug-in hybrid. A 3.6-liter V6 is standard and a 5.7-liter V8 is optional. Also available and sold separately is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that’s part of this vehicle’s plug-in hybrid system. The gas models work with an 8-speed automatic transmission to route power the wheels. Moreover, the PHEV utilizes an integrated transmission-traction motor to motive this model.

5 – As in Uconnect5, which is the latest version of the Chrysler Group’s infotainment system. We’ve long been fans of this interface, finding it one of the best ones on the market. The new scheme offers improved or expanded safety, security, and entertainment features. Further, these include standard wireless Apple CarPlay support, standard wireless Android Auto compatibility, and a 6-month SiriusXM Radio trial. Available Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, connected services, TomTom traffic and travel services, and HD Radio can be had.

Two or Three Rows

5/7 – We haven’t seen a three-row Grand Cherokee before, therefore customers have a choice in seating capacity. The standard model seats five. The long-wheelbase model seats seven or six with middle-row captain’s chairs to swap out the bench seat.

7 – The number of trims available with the two-row model is seven. These are the Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve. The Grand Cherokee L comes in six trims, matching the standard model with no Trailhawk version offered. All in all, the choices are above average for the segment, with more build choices than usual.

10 – For drivers desiring an extra measure of protection or guidance, the 2022 Grand Cherokee offers 10 features for choosing. Specifically, these include a new drowsy-driver detection system and surround-view camera system. Also, a head-up display, a night-vision camera, an intersection collision assist are new for this model. These features join forward collision warning with active braking and traffic-sign recognition. Further, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking assist are available.

12 – The Grand Cherokee boasts 12 different vehicle management systems that effectively adjust traction control accordingly. Five selectable systems are at play: Auto, Sport, Sand/Mud, Rock, and Snow. The Grand Cherokee is designed to go places where other models dare not tread.

Fuel Economy Numbers

14/22 –Fuel economy is not one of the Grand Cherokee’s strong suits. Choose the V8 model, which includes standard four-wheel drive, and this one earns 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The standard engine, a V6, gets 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway with rear-wheel drive. Drop each number by 1 mpg when selecting the optional four-wheel drive. If fuel efficiency is important to you, the PHEV averages 57 MPGe.

19 – Choose a 2022 Grand Cherokee and the standard audio package contains six speakers. Also available is a nine-speaker Alpine sound system with a subwoofer and a 506-watt amplifier. At the top of the trio of sound systems is a McIntosh audio system. This audio package includes 19 speakers, a subwoofer, and a 950-watt amplifier.

24– The number of miles the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe model travels in all-electric mode is 24. A lever to the left of the transmission dialer manages the modes. A separate switch moves this SUV into four-wheel-drive mode.

84.6 – If cargo capacity is important to you, the Grand Cherokee L is the better choice. This model offers 17.2 cubic feet of standard cargo space and 46.9 cubic feet with the third-row seat folded. Behind the first-row seat is 84.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Choose the two-row version and this one comes with 37.7 cubic feet of storage capacity. Fold the rear seat and that area mushrooms to 70.8 cubic feet.

Horsepower Comparison

375 – The smallest engine available is the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. This powerplant makes 375 horsepower as it combines with the hybrid system to motivate the Jeep. Compare that to the V6 with 290 horsepower and the V8 with 357 horsepower and you can color us impressed!

7.200 – Models in this segment typically pull 5,000, perhaps 6,000 pounds when properly equipped. The Grand Cherokee (along with the Dodge Durango) are the outliers here, however. When equipped with a trailer package, the V8 model pulls up to 7,200 pounds. Certainly, the larger engine option makes all the difference here.


2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Pricing


Jeep prices the standard-wheelbase model from $37,785 to $63,760 and the Grand Cherokee L from $39,220 to $64,395, plus a $1,795 destination charge. With every possible option and package taken, the top-end model tops $70,000.

In summary, the latest Grand Cherokee delivers more than mainstream models, while rivaling some luxury SUVs in amenities and comfort.
