Safety Features
Equipped with smart brake support, front cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, emergency lane keeping, radar cruise control, and other features, the CX-90 offers a comprehensive suite of standard and optional driver-assist features.
Cargo Space
The 2024 CX-90 supplies 14.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. Although that area is small, it is large enough to hold groceries or enough luggage for a weekend away. Fold down the third row and 40.0 cubic cargo space is at the ready. This matches or exceeds the storage area in compact models. Drop down both the second and third rows supplies 74.3 cubic feet of cargo area, which supplies ample room for garden center visits.
Towing Capabilities
The turbo models have a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds, while the PHEV is rated at 3,500 pounds. Thus, at the upper end, the CX-90 aligns with its rivals in all matters of towing.
Fuel Efficiency
The turbo models deliver up to 24/28/25 mpg city/highway/combined, while the PHEV offers additional efficiency with electric-only driving. Under certain conditions, the electric motor powers this vehicle. Although the range is just 26 miles, there are times when the gas engine and electric motor combine to deliver full power, rivaling the CX-90’s turbo choices.
Driving Experience
Balanced handling, precise steering, robust brakes, and the option for a purely electric driving experience are key characteristics, although transitions between power sources may be noticeable.
Our test model was the CX-90 PHEV and, like the gas engines, these send power to all four wheels utilizing an 8-speed automatic transmission. As for the power transitions, what we noticed was the switch from gas to EV power wasn’t always smooth. Under hard acceleration, both systems work to deliver over 300 horsepower an amount we believe is commiserate with what a vehicle this size should deliver. In other words, the gas engine working by itself is underpowered. Fortunately, both systems work in conjunction when you need power.
Credit Mazda for developing a utility vehicle that is rigid and has an improved turning radius over the previous model. The 2024 CX-90 is quiet and comfortable, with direct steering and weighted handling. The brakes are firm and that’s especially noteworthy in a hybrid system that often comes with squishy brakes.
No Federal Tax Credit
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is not eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit available with U.S.-built electrified vehicles, impacting consumer value for the PHEV variant. This model is built in Japan, therefore no credit is extended to consumers.
Competitive Position
The CX-90 is a midsize, three-row crossover SUV that competes with models like the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, Nissan Pathfinder, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Other models in this segment to consider include the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Toyota Grand Highlander.
Our Recommendation
Unfortunately, the lack of a federal tax credit means the PHEV version of the CX-90 doesn’t present a great bargain. While we didn’t have the opportunity to test the inline-six engines, we believe either option would likely please customers. With the high-end models reaching $60,000 and the more “value-oriented” version priced around $50,000, it’s a substantial investment. This pricing reflects the significant increase in automotive costs that we’ve seen in recent years.
