400 pounds, the big electric SUV now weighs about 5,219 pounds, putting it surprisingly close to large gas-powered rivals. Here’s how Tesla pulled off this stealth diet.
1. A Leaner High-Voltage Wiring Harness
Tesla reengineered the charge-port wiring and swapped some copper for lighter materials, cutting mass without compromising performance.
Estimated weight saved: ~44 lb
2. A Smaller, Lighter 12-Volt Battery
The old lead-acid 12-volt battery is gone. In its place is a compact lithium-ion unit that’s lighter and more energy-efficient.
Estimated weight saved: ~14 lb
3. Simplified Cooling System
Fewer radiators, better packaging, and smarter coolant routing helped reduce weight while maintaining thermal performance for the battery and motors.
Estimated weight saved: ~30 lb
4. Suspension Tweaks
Revised front and rear suspension components trim unnecessary metal while preserving strength and ride quality.
Estimated weight saved: ~10 lb
5. Thinner Plastic Fascias
Tesla made the front and rear bumper covers about 0.6 millimeters thinner. It’s a small change that adds up across two large panels.
Estimated weight saved: ~10 lb
6. Megacastings Replace Multiple Smaller Parts
Large front and rear “megacastings” replace multiple smaller structural castings, reducing parts count and mass.
Estimated weight saved: 20+ lb
Bonus: Increased stiffness and simplified manufacturing.
7. Reworked Seats and Mounting Hardware
Tesla redesigned seat frames and mounting structures, eliminating redundant supports and rethinking how seats tie into the floor.
Estimated weight saved: ~67 lb (bench and bucket changes combined)
8. Slimmed-Down Interior Trim
Thinner headliner materials, more efficient manufacturing, and integrating airbag-deployment requirements directly into the fabric all contributed to interior weight loss.
Estimated weight saved: ~80 lb
9. More Efficient Motor & Drivetrain Packaging
Incremental refinements to the drive units and supporting hardware reduced mass while keeping the same or better performance. The savings per part are modest, but they add up across the vehicle.
Estimated contribution: Several pounds spread across the drivetrain.
10. Battery Pack Refinements
Higher-density cells and revised module orientation reduce redundant structure and hardware inside the pack. Fewer components mean less weight and simpler assembly.
Estimated contribution: Dozens of pounds, depending on configuration.
The Bottom Line
None of these changes alone is dramatic—but together, they add up to nearly 400 pounds trimmed. The 2026 Tesla Model X is now lighter, slightly more efficient, and more competitive with premium gas-powered SUVs, showing what careful, system-wide engineering can do over the life of a platform.
Might other Tesla models follow? That seems likely. Tesla is not known for overhauling their exteriors, but they do have a reputation for updating technology and, now, for reducing girth. The latter is a page competitors most likely will copy, in an effort to control weight and extend driving range and dynamics.
