Smart Choice: 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

Toyota established its leadership in the hybrid market with the launch of the Prius in the late 1990s. Since then, nearly every Toyota model has introduced a hybrid option, including the popular RAV4 Hybrid. As the brand’s best-selling vehicle, the RAV4 Hybrid presents an appealing alternative to fully electric cars, and we had the chance to test it for a week.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Overview

The available RAV4 Hybrid models include the RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD ($31,475), RAV4 Hybrid XLE AWD ($32,985), RAV4 Hybrid SE AWD ($34,170), RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Special Edition ($34,695), RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium AWD ($35,875), RAV4 Hybrid XSE AWD ($37,135), and the RAV4 Hybrid Limited AWD ($39,780). Add $1,350 for the destination charge.

Toyota also offers standard RAV4 (gas) and RAV4 Prime (plug-in hybrid) models. Given that our focus is entirely on hybrid, we’re not covering the other two choices.

Modern Design

The latest RAV4 generation merges sporty design elements with a more polished, upscale appearance, resulting in a refined utility vehicle. Small tweaks, like squaring off the wheel wells, give it a tougher, more rugged stance. From front to back, the current model exudes strength and even a touch of sophistication. This design is a clear evolution from the original’s “cute ute” persona. While the RAV4 Hybrid may not have the off-road capabilities of the 4Runner, it certainly echoes some of its rugged styling cues.

Versatile Interior

Inside the RAV4 Hybrid, the cabin offers a balanced mix of soft-touch materials and durable plastics, with the harder surfaces thoughtfully placed below eye level to maintain a refined feel. As you progress through the trim levels, the interior quality gets a noticeable boost, introducing elements like faux leather and elegant double-stitched accents that enhance both comfort and visual appeal. The front seats provide decent comfort for those of average height, but taller passengers might find the thigh support lacking. Opting for the higher-end trims remedies this, as they offer more cushioned seating with significantly improved support.

Cargo space is a standout feature, boasting nearly 70 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded flat—ample room for hauling anything from weekend project supplies to your latest yard sale treasures. Plus, the RAV4 Hybrid’s 1,750-pound towing capacity adds an extra layer of versatility, perfect for those times when you need to tow a small trailer for additional cargo.

Safety and Technology

The 2024 RAV4 comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, including features like the pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, emergency steering assist, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, and lane tracing assist. It also includes automatic high beams and road sign assist.

Additional available features include blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, and front and rear parking assist with automatic braking. The RAV4 is also equipped with Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, anti-lock braking, and smart stop technology. Other features include a bird’s eye view camera, intelligent clearance sonar, and rear seat reminder.

The 2024 RAV4 offers an impressive array of standard technology features, including an 8-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Further, shoppers will find three USB ports, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a six-speaker audio system, remote keyless entry, navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Higher trims offer additional upgrades such as a 10.5-inch touchscreen, an 11-speaker audio system, and wireless device charging. Additionally, they include features like a digital rearview mirror, front and rear parking sensors, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a surround-view camera system.
