PHEV Delight: Lexus RX 450h+

The Lexus RX is a mid-sized crossover known for its hybrid options, turbo engines, and advanced technologies. Launched in the late 1990s, it has made Lexus a leading luxury brand in the U.S. The 2023 redesign offers gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions. We tested the top model, the RX 450h+.

Lexus RX Overview

When Lexus unveiled the 2023 RX, the major change was not just the exterior design but the new engine options. The V6 was replaced by naturally aspirated and turbocharged four-cylinder engines, with some hybrid variants. In total, there are now four powertrain options available, covering gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid choices.

For the 2025 model year, Lexus presents the RX in four distinct configurations: RX priced at $50,325, RX Hybrid at $52,475, RX 500h F Sport Performance at $66,150, and RX Plug-In Hybrid EV at $72,610. An additional delivery charge of $1,095 applies. Considering the various powertrain, drivetrain options, and trims, there are a total of 19 different RX models available for 2025.

Highlights of the Lexus RX 450h+

Lexus sent us the RX Plug-In Hybrid EV or RX 450h+ for testing. Therefore, our review covers this model alone. We will mention the other grades from time to time, but our focus is on what we drove.

For starters, we are pleased with the current design language. Lexus’ controversial hourglass grille remains, but the top part is obscured by the hood and color-coordinated cladding. It takes an eagle eye to notice any similarity with the previous design, otherwise the mesh-like parallelogram offers a distinctive take on the spindle layout.

Front to rear, all versions of the Lexus RX supply a sporty, even muscular presence. Its profile is marked by sweeping lines, including a floating roofline and a high beltline. The color choices and aluminum wheels offer further visual interest. From the rear, the RX has large lamps connected by a thin LED bar. A liftgate spoiler and diffuser-like treatment advances its sporty appeal.

Luxurious Interior

Lexus does many things well. But when it comes to interiors, few match the fit, finish, and choice of materials used. Moreover, the cabin is very quiet, comfortable, and uncluttered.

Beginning with the seating, base models are outfitted with imitation leather, which is called NuLuxe by Lexus. The material is synthetic, but it has the look and feel of real hides. Furthermore, the seats are “breathable,” which means that you won’t incur a sticky feeling on hot days. Other grades come with high-quality semi-aniline leather or a blend of suede and Ultrasuede.

Lexus also makes use of open-pore wood, again depending on the trim. This means walnut, bamboo, and ash may be present, ecologically harvested woods paired with aluminum or metal trim. Soft-touch materials cover the dashboard and other surfaces, while plastics are relegated to the lower dashboard and other mostly out-of-the-way places. Overall, the look is elegant and upscale.

The front seats are quite comfortable, offering sufficient padding along with heating and cooling elements. A heated steering wheel is also present. The rear seat holds three and is also thickly padded.

Cargo space is not particularly impressive – Lexus does not release those numbers – but most people should find it sufficient for their needs. The standard tow rating is just 1,000 pounds, but when equipped with the trailering package, the RX pulls up to 3,500 pounds.

The 2025 Lexus RX includes a range of technological features for convenience and connectivity. On the Road

Lexus equips the RX with either turbocharged or naturally aspirated engines. There are four powertrain choices available.

As for the RX 450h+, it comes equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with electric motors, delivering a total system output of 304 horsepower.

This arrangement includes an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, enabling an EPA-estimated all-electric driving range of 37 miles. The vehicle utilizes an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) and comes standard with all-wheel drive.

Potent Powertrain

We found the PHEV’s powertrain system punchy as it offers strong, yet quiet step-off power and robust highway entering acceleration. It does not possess a typical CVT as the inputs are electronic as power routes to the wheels.

Specifically, Lexus’ eCVT uses a planetary gearset and two electric motor-generators to manage power distribution between the gasoline engine and electric motors. At low speeds, it can operate on electric power alone, while at higher speeds, it adjusts power output for engine efficiency.

Notably, during hard acceleration, the engine and electric motors work together. The system includes regenerative braking, which converts energy from braking into electricity to recharge the battery. Likewise, this design provides smooth acceleration, improved fuel efficiency, and seamless power delivery without traditional gear shifts.

Pleasing Driver

Quite frankly, we found the 450h enjoyable to drive. It is quiet under most driving situations, but delivers ample power when needed. Previously, Lexus employed V6 engines to motivate the RX. They are not missed! Instead, the selection of powertrain choices range from the mild to almost wild, ensuring that the RX meets most needs.

Competitive Set

The Lexus RX is positioned within the luxury midsize SUV segment, competing with other distinguished models such as the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, Audi Q8, Volvo XC90, Acura MDX, Genesis GV80, Cadillac XT6, and Lincoln Nautilus. These vehicles provide comparable features regarding advanced technology, performance capabilities, and overall comfort.

Lexus RX 450h+ Parting Thoughts

The 2025 Lexus RX remains a top choice in a competitive segment. Some of the earlier versions offered versions with a useless third row. However, if you need the extra space, the beautiful Lexus TX has you covered. All in all, we are quite pleased with the RX, a model that offers an excellent blend of style, comfort, performance, and luxury.
