Ford Ranger: Built Better Than Ever

Technology and Safety

The 2024 Ford Ranger comes equipped with a variety of key technology features. To start, it includes a standard 10.1-inch infotainment system with SYNC 4A software, while an optional 12-inch touchscreen is also available for those looking for a larger display. Additionally, wireless charging is standard across all trims, providing added convenience. Moving up to the Lariat trim, you’ll find a 12-inch infotainment system with SYNC 4A, along with 4G LTE connectivity, smart device integration, and a premium sound system. Meanwhile, the Raptor model offers a 12.4-inch center touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an optional built-in navigation system and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio setup.

On the safety side, the Ford Ranger includes essential driver-assist features. For instance, a blind spot monitor and rear parking aid come standard, enhancing situational awareness. Furthermore, adaptive cruise control is available on select trims, providing added ease on the road. The Lariat trim takes this a step further by offering both adaptive cruise control and automatic parking as standard features. Together, these safety technologies ensure that the Ranger delivers practical driver assistance in various driving scenarios.

Powertrain Choices

Ford went from offering one powertrain combination with the previous-generation Ranger to three with this one. That’s impressive, given that most competitors no longer offer two choices but just one—or one engine with your choice of a manual or automatic transmission.

Ford’s standard bearer remains the turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that powered the previous model. The second choice is a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 engine. That’s the same engine found in some F-150 models. Finally, the Ranger receives a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, but this one is reserved exclusively for the Raptor.

All three engines work with a 10-speed automatic transmission to route power to the rear or all four wheels. Sorry, no manual gearbox is offered. The 2011 Ranger was the last one to offer one.

On and Off Road

We’re thinking the four-by-four take rate for the Ranger is quite high, based on what we see on the road. Even if the four-wheel drive isn’t regularly used, it comes in handy.

Our Lariat came with the standard engine, producing 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It is wholly adequate for the job at hand, but the V6s with 315 and 405 horsepower, respectively, are certainly noteworthy.

You’ll be driving in two-wheel drive most of the time. When you do, expect robust step-off power and plenty of passing gusto. We sensed some turbo lag, but typically when the engine was still cold. On occasion, pressing the pedal to the metal resulted in an inconsequential delay – noticeable, but not a dealbreaker.

Off-Road Fun

Our off-road antics were limited to our favorite gravel road on state university property. Over the past few years, the previously used off-road terrain properties we enjoyed were developed. That’s sad for us because they were nearby and accessible. In any case, we made do with what we had and appreciated the Ranger’s grip and composure. In 4H mode, the Ranger moves forward with ease, imbuing driver confidence. If you’re stuck in a rut, the 4L mode will free you. The control dial moves quickly and changes modes without having to put the vehicle in neutral.

Like other trucks, the Ranger isn’t as comfortable as a car or a crossover-based SUV. But it shines with its plentiful power, connected steering, and strong brakes. Unlike its Maverick and F-150 stablemates, you won’t find an electrified variant. But that’s okay, as the Ranger fulfills its mission in a highly competitive segment still dominated by the Toyota Tacoma.

Parting Thoughts

In recent years, the $30,000 pricing threshold for midsize pickup trucks was breached. Most models start close to $35,000, delivery fees included. The popular XLT with four-wheel drive tops $40,000. If that’s too much, a similarly equipped Maverick will run about $10,000 less. Yes, there is quite a difference between these two models, but the choice is there.

Price notwithstanding, the 2024 Ford Ranger is the overhaul this model needed. It stacks up quite well against the competition, and with the Raptor model, it is the beast of the segment. Finally, no other manufacturer can claim Ford’s truck segment penetration. It boasts small (Maverick), medium (Ranger), and large (F-150) models. The automaker also serves up medium- and heavy-duty models under the F-Series banner. That’s quite an accomplishment.
