Electric Pony: Ford Mustang Mach-E

The Ford Mustang name is synonymous with classic good looks and performance, a touring coupe that’s been in constant production for six decades. Thankfully, Ford remains committed to building this iconic model, even as competitors have left the segment. But Ford is also cognizant about the future and that’s why an electric variant now exists. The Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV may not perfectly align with the traditional Mustang, but it upholds the original’s driving dynamic.

Ford introduced the Mustang Mach-E for the 2021 model year, harnessing heritage and combining that with advanced technology to form it. We were doubters early on, mostly because the automaker incorporated the venerable Mustang name. Like many doubters, we worried that Ford sullied the Mustang name. While still not in favor of the naming convention, our opinion overall of the Mach-E is positive. This SUV is handsome, comfortable, and fast!

Ford Mustang Mach-E Overview

For 2024, Ford offers the Mustang Mach-E starting from $39,995 with a whopping $1,995 destination fee. If you lease, there are other charges added, including document and acquisition fees. Some fees may be negotiable, but the destination charge is not.

Some good news, however – many buyers are eligible for the available $7,500 federal tax credit. That won’t save you money up front, but it can reduce your tax burden.

Beyond the standard Select grade, buyers can choose the Premium ($43,995), GT ($54,995), and Mach-E Rally ($58,995) grades. The first two models come with standard rear-wheel drive or available e-all-wheel-drive. The other two are all-wheel-drive-only.

The standard 72kWh capacity battery system delivers 230 miles of driving range in the Select grade or 250 miles with the Premium. Choose the extended range 91 kWh capacity battery system and this one supplies 300 miles with the Select and 320 miles with the Premium. In GT guise, the range is 280 miles. With the Rally model, it’s 265 miles.

Mach-E Exterior Styling

The Ford Mustang Mach-E effortlessly showcases classic Mustang design cues, despite being an EV. While it lacks the traditional coupe grille, its front fascia still mirrors the familiar shape. A muscular hood, beefy wheels, and a sleek coupe-like roofline further emphasize its connection to the iconic pony car.

Ford has cleverly concealed the door handles, opting for push-button releases instead. From the rear, the Mach-E features familiar triple-lens taillights, with the sequential motion of the coupe. The front accent lights include a unique sequential design, adding a fresh element to the EV’s styling.

Interior Highlights

The Mustang Mach-E is designed with SUV-like proportions, providing ample space for five adults, along with generous cargo room. With its rear space offering 29.7 cubic feet of space, expanding to 59.7 cubic feet with the seats folded down, it easily accommodates luggage, camping gear, or other essentials. In addition to this, a front trunk adds even more practical storage space.

Inside, the Mach-E strikes a balance between sleek modern design and smart functionality. Premium features like available Bang & Olufsen speakers float above the air vents like a soundbar, while a flip-up armrest doubles as a convenient storage spot for bags or purses. Classic Mustang elements, such as the double-cowl instrument panel, provide a subtle nod to its heritage.

The available panoramic fixed-glass roof is designed with practicality in mind. A special coating keeps the cabin cooler in summer and warmer in winter, while an inner layer blocks UV rays. The battery’s skateboard-style placement beneath the floor maximizes cabin space for passengers and cargo.

A streamlined dashboard houses an elegant digital gauge cluster, complemented by a massive, vertically oriented touchscreen. Clever storage solutions, like the pocket under the flip-up armrest, offer space for everyday items. With a cargo area that expands up to 60 cubic feet and a front trunk that can double as a cooler, the Mach-E is built for versatility. Other features, including ambient lighting, heated seats, wireless charging, and a panoramic sunroof, complete the thoughtful, modern interior.
