By the Numbers: 2022 Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima is a sedan, one of four such four-door gas models sold by this automaker. As a midsize vehicle, it is joined by the flagship Maxima, compact Sentra, and subcompact Versa. Nissan also makes the GT-R and Z, and the all-electric Leaf, keeping this manufacturer active in a declining car segment.

Crossovers may now dominate, and Nissan is strongly engaged there with its compact Rogue and midsize Pathfinder amongst its more notable models. Still, when it comes to five-passenger space, car models such as the Altima are hard to dismiss, especially with all-wheel drive now an option.

By the Numbers

Let’s take a “by the numbers” look at the 2022 Nissan Altima and all it has to offer.

2, Engines

All five trims come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission. This engine delivers up to 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque.

Available with the SR trim is an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine ($4,350 upgrade). This one makes 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque on premium grade gasoline or 236/257 with regular grade. Again, a CVT sends power to the wheels.

3, Packages

Nissan offers three packages with the 2022 Altima. Each one corresponds to a specific trim. For instance, the S trim offers a Driver Assist Package ($475). This package bundles rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, and a rear sonar system.

The SV Premium Package ($1,800) comes with a moonroof, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and ProPilot Assist. It also comes with chrome and leather touches, automatic brake hold, and dual-exhaust tips.

The SR Midnight Edition is available only with the standard engine. This $1,750 package brings in black exterior accents, LED fog lights, a power-sliding glass moonroof, heated front seats, and heated side mirrors. Special badging, designer wheels, and driver lumbar support are also included.

4, All-Wheel Drive

We made mention of all-wheel drive elsewhere. It is an option that rolled out with the Altima beginning in 2019. Few competitors offer it, including the Toyota Camry, Kia K5, and the Subaru Legacy. Only the Legacy makes it standard. In any case, all-wheel drive means power is sent to all four wheels as needed. For instance, if the system detects wheel slippage, up to half the power is routed rearward. This typically happens on slippery roads, especially where ice and snow are found.

5, Trims

Nissan offers the 2022 Altima in five trims: S ($24,550), SV ($25,550), SR ($26,550), SL ($29,990), and Platinum ($34,250). Add $1,025 for the destination charge.

The features offered vary widely, depending on the trim. For instance, the S trim comes with 16-inch steel wheels, while all other trims have either 17- or 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. LED lighting, smartphone compatibility, an 8-inch touch-screen display, and the driver-assist package optional with the base model are included with the SV. That’s a $1,000 upgrade for a long list of desirable highlights.

Move up through the trim range and Nissan adds such elements as leather-wrapped seats, dual-zone climate control, and a Bose audio system. A heated steering wheel, navigation, and additional driver-assist technologies come in.

9, Configurations

Building on the five trims are nine possible configurations. The S is front-wheel-drive-only while the Platinum is all-wheel-drive-only. The SV and SL trims come with standard front- and available all-wheel drive.

The SR is the outlier among the Altima’s trim line. Here, Nissan offers standard front- and available all-wheel drive like the SV and SL. But customers also can upgrade to the turbo engine and that is available with front-wheel-drive-only.

15.4, Trunk Capacity

The Altima supplies generous cargo capacity – 15.4 cubic feet to be precise. Not only that, the 60/40 split fold-down bench seat supplies access from the trunk to the cabin area, delivering even more cargo space.

39, MPG

The Nissan Altima is an efficient sedan, earning 28 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 32 mpg combined for the base S trim. The other trims with standard front-wheel drive earn 27/37/31 mpg city/highway/combined. With all-wheel drive, those numbers are either 26/36/30 or 25/35/29 mpg city/highway/combined. The SR trim with the turbo engine earns 25/34/29 mpg city/highway/combined. Moreover, all models run on regular-grade gasoline.

111.2, Dimensions

The 2022 Altima sits on a 111.2-inch wheelbase. Go back a few generations and that’s the length of certain full-size models. The Altima is 192.9 inches long, 72.9 inches wide, and 56.7 or 57.4 inches tall (depending on the configuration). As a result, this sedan seats five, matching the manufacturer’s stated number.

The legroom measures 43.8 inches in the front row to 35.2 inches in the second row. The maximum headroom comes in at 39.1 and 36.9 inches, front to back, respectively. The shoulder room is 58.2 inches up front and 57.1 inches in the rear. Finally, the hip room is 54.7 inches in the first row and 54.5 inches in the second row.

Altima Considerations

We recommend starting your search with the SV trim. For just $1,000 more than the S, it brings in several comfort and tech features not offered with the base model. It is at this trim that all-wheel drive becomes available.

In all, we believe you will find a well-equipped 2022 Altima for about $30,000. That is a reasonable price point for this segment and perhaps a better value than a similar crossover. In any case, you may need to work with your dealer to find the model you want or place an order to have one made to your requirements.
