Hyundai Ioniq 6 Overview

The Ioniq 6’s estimated all-electric range of over 610 km (361 miles in EPA testing) is quite remarkable and should make it a practical choice for many drivers. Additionally, the multi-charging capability, which allows for ultra-fast charging at 400-V/800-V, is a valuable feature for those who need to recharge their vehicle quickly.

The car’s aerodynamic styling is also noteworthy, as this can help to improve its overall efficiency and reduce drag. And the various empowering features, such as the Dual Color Ambient Lighting, Speed Sync Lighting, EV Performance Tune-up, and Electric Active Sound Design (e-ASD), should enhance the driving experience and make it more enjoyable.

Three Grades

Hyundai offers the 2023 Ioniq 6 in three grades – SE, SEL, and Limited. Customers have a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with an electric range up to an EPA-estimated 361 miles. The following is the breakdown of each model by price, powertrain choices, and equipment. Add $1,115 for the destination charge.

2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 profile

Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE – From $41,600

Hyundai offers the base Ioniq 6 SE in a standard range configuration (240 miles). This model features a 111-kW electric motor that generates 149 horsepower and sends power to the rear wheels utilizing a single-speed reduction gear transmission. Also available with the SE is a 168-kW electric motor that produces 225 horsepower and sends power to the rear wheels. Finally, all-wheel drive is available thanks to a 165-kW front motor and a 74-kW rear electric motor that combine for 320 horsepower. The latter two choices deliver 361 and 316 miles of electric driving range, respectively.

The list of standard Ioniq 6 features is impressive and includes four-wheel disc brakes, regenerative paddle shifters, drive mode select, ultra-fast charging, and a battery pre-heater. This model comes with LED projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, and LED turn signals. Also, heated side mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a rear spoiler with LED combi lamps comes standard.

Inside, the Ioniq 6 seats five. The cabin features eco-friendly materials, including recycled plastics, flaxseed oil dyed leather, and fishing net carpeting. Variable ambient lighting is strategically placed to conceal its source as it covers the door panels.

Tech & Safety Features

The list of standard features include a power driver’s seat and heated front seats. The Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility allows for seamless integration with smartphones, and the 12.3-inch central touchscreen supplies a large and clear display for accessing various functions. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is also a valuable feature that provides real-time information about the vehicle’s performance. The six speakers should provide adequate sound quality for most drivers. Multiple USB ports and Bluelink connected services come standard.

On the safety front, Hyundai equips this EV with forward collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot collision warning, lane keeping assist, and lane following assist. Also, high beam assist, a rear seatbelt reminder, and driver attention warning come standard.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 SEL – From $47,700

Move up to the SEL grade and this model matches the extended range electric motor arrangement for both the rear- and all-wheel drive models. The most noteworthy exterior difference is that this model comes with 20-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, shoppers will find imitation leather seating surfaces, an automatic-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and wireless device charging. Hyundai also upgrades the safety tech to include evasive steering assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, and highway drive assist.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 Limited – From $52,600

The range-topping Limited trim pulls out all the stops. This one comes with a wide sunroof, power-folding side mirrors, and a premium exterior paint scheme.

Inside, the Limited grade includes a Bose 8-speaker audio package, an 8-way power passenger seat with lumbar support, premium door sill plates, and aluminum pedals. Shoppers will also find rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated front seats. A blind-spot view monitor and parking collision avoidance assist comes standard.

Competitive Set

Hyundai targets the Tesla Model 3 with its latest Ioniq model. Other vehicles in this segment include the BMW i4 and the Volkswagen ID Aero. We expect the segment will continue to grow and offer a few more competitors, though crossover models will dominate.

Model Analysis

The Ioniq 6 brings dramatic styling to the EV sector, overshadowing the Tesla Model 3 in that department. However, Tesla’s experience and the much larger storage compartment in the Model 3 (19.8 cubic feet v. 11.2 cubic feet) are differences of note. Lastly, buyers of the Tesla Model 3 may qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit. On the other hand, because the Ioniq 6 is built overseas, customers are not eligible for a tax credit.
