It’s been said, “all good things must come to an end.” Fortunately for patrons of the monthly Sanford Car News show in Lee County, North Carolina, that statement represents a one-month break to celebrate Christmas with loved ones. Come January, the show returns followed by a special “poker run” in February.
Classic Cars and a Special Guest
As always, the Sanford Car News meetup (see their Facebook page) was dominated by classic cars with a few newer models on hand. We supplied the 2022 Subaru BRZ (you’re welcome) with its new 2.4-liter flat-four engine producing 228 horsepower. Paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, this little ride may not keep up with muscle cars, but it’s better on the turns than any Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger (I’ll prove it). As for cornering, it gets it done.
This month, we brought with us a young engineering friend, Eric Blackwell, who is Carolina-born and bred. An NC State graduate and diehard Wolfpack fan, Eric works in Virginia and is part of the generation that will see the transition to electrification unfold. No pressure, but it is his generation that will ensure classic cars continue to receive the attention they deserve for decades to come.
Most of the rides on hand were familiar to us, but there were a few delicious surprises. The 1969 Datsun 510 wagon may be as rare as they come. That rat rod with a large block 1968 Chevrolet engine shows what you can do when you marry pieces of various vehicles to create a unique whip.
A 1965 Cobra kit car with a Ford Racing engine made an appearance as did various cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Chevrolet seemed the dominant brand with lots of models from the 50s, 60s, and 70s on hand.
The Low Down Dirty Heathens Band
Once again, the Camelback Brewing Company supplied the musical entertainment. This month, “The Low Down Dirty Heathens Band,” held sway as they sang Outlaw Country and Blues (see their Facebook page). Yes, they were enjoyable and some of you showed it by dancing (alone) or with your partner. Others warbled along with the band, but we’re glad not one of you seized the mic… why spoil the moment?!
Inside, Camelback served up home-grown, local, and national brew. I recommend the rhubarb-strawberry ale, which is worth more than just a sample. That’s all we’re saying. Their ever-changing taps mean there is always something new. The food menu serves as a fitting complement to your drinks of choice. We can attest that the Loaded Fries with cheddar cheese, bacon, and jalapeno peppers will more than satisfy you.
Planning for 2022
Driven Autos will take a brief break ahead of Christmas. But we’ll begin taking in shows as soon as January 1. Weather permitting, of course. We cover central and eastern North Carolina but plan to head west as well as to push into Virginia and South Carolina in 2022.
We’re looking to cover special events, especially those that support children, first responders, and veterans. Let us know if you would like coverage. That exposure always comes pro bono for non-profits and other community organizations.
