Windshield Replacement: How Much?

It’s shocking how easily a windshield can be damaged. Sometimes, all it might take is one speck of loose gravel and then… crack! And what’s even more surprising is the repair expenses.

When windshields get damaged, one of the first things that come to mind is, “How much will this cost me?”

If it’s just a small chip, you can have it repaired. But if the damage is quite big, it may warrant a windshield replacement – which is one of the worst nightmares for many vehicle owners.

When Should You Replace Your Windshield?

The windshield is one of your car’s most important safety features. It’s crucial in keeping the vehicle’s structure intact and preventing the roof from caving in and crushing you in case of accidents.

That said, you should schedule an appointment with a local auto glass company as soon as you notice any damage in your windshield so you can have it repaired or replaced right away. While the crack or chip may appear innocuous, it can “spider” and develop into larger cracks and pose a real danger to you and your passengers.

What’s the Average Cost of Windshield Replacement?

A new windshield typically costs around $200 to $400, but some windshield replacements can run to the thousands, especially for luxury vehicles. The thing is, it can be difficult to come up with an accurate estimate because windshields are not one-size-fits-all.  Prices vary from vehicle to vehicle and location to location.

There are numerous variables that influence the cost of windshield replacement, which are as follows:

Vehicle Make and Model

When you call repair shops to ask for a quote, one of the very first things they’ll ask for is the make and model of your vehicle. These details will have a huge impact on the cost of your windshield replacement.

You’re likely to find windshields for common vehicles like Honda or Toyota offered at competitive prices, while windshields for luxury vehicles will cost you twice or three times more because they’re often only available through the dealership. Moreover, windshields for old car models are cheaper than that of newer models.

Type of Glass Used

The type of glass used will also affect the price of a replacement windshield, which often comes down to a choice between OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) quality and aftermarket products.

OEM windshields are the same type and quality as the one originally installed in your vehicle, so expect to pay a premium price for them. If you want a cheaper alternative, you can go for lower-grade, non-OEM glass but you run the risk of your new windshield falling short of expectations.

Special Features

The cost of your windshield replacement will also factor in any additional expenses associated with the type of vehicle you own. Some vehicles have unique windshield molding designs, while others have up to five separate sensors on the windshield and require more work to replace.

Location

Windshield replacement services vary depending on your location. In some states the charge is higher, while in others the cost is less expensive.

To know how much it would really cost to replace your windshield, ask for a quote from local auto glass companies. Get estimates from several shops and compare their rates to see which one offers the better deal.

Is Windshield Replacement Covered by Insurance?

You can pay for your windshield replacement out of pocket, but you’ll want to check first if it’s covered by your auto insurance policy. If you have comprehensive coverage, the expense of fixing or replacing your windshield will be covered by your policy to some extent.

It’s important to note, though, that your auto insurance may not fully cover the cost of your new windshield. Make sure to go through your policy first before taking your vehicle for repairs.

How Do You Ensure Quality Windshield Replacement?

When it comes to replacing their windshield, many car owners settle for the cheapest alternative available. But while taking this route might save you a few hundred dollars, the repercussions can be severe.

The windshield is your first line of defense when on the road. An improperly installed windshield may fly away or cave in during an accident, and may cost you your life.

All in all, choose a reliable auto glass company for your windshield repair and replacement needs. Specifically, by researching companies on the Internet; reading online reviews, and even asking around. The market reputation of a business is the most convincing proof of its trustworthiness

  1. I like when you said that a new windshield typically costs around $200 to $400. I recently got into a minor car accident and my car window has been cracked. I need to get some windshield replacement and I am looking forward to getting a good service near my area. Thanks so much for the article!

    1. If insurance has your covered, then your cost is $0. That said, not all glass is created equal. Sometimes it pays to opt for the more expensive glass.
