Land Rover and Range Rover are synonymous with 4×4. They continue to dominate the 4×4 market through their cutting edge design, top-tier safety features and overall premium drivability. With the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque taking the compact luxury SUV market by storm, there is little wonder these models just continue to increase in their popularity.
There is however still some confusion about the differences between these two models. Due to their similar sizing and their shared Land Rover markings and features it can be tricky to spot the differences that these two models offer. With that in mind, we have created a comparison of these two models to cover off all of the similarities, and all of the differences between these two fantastic cars.
Although the sizes of both the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque are quite similar the interiors of both of these cars are reasonably easy to distinguish from each other. The Evoque has a wider stance and a shorter window line and is more in keeping with the straight lines that Land Rover is so famous for. The Discovery Sport is very different to look at from the exterior. It has a more typical crossover look, offers much smoother and curvier lines and looks much more like a mainstream SUV than a more classic and typical Land Rover. The Discovery Sport proudly sports the word ‘Discovery’ on the front and the back of the car, whilst the Evoque is happy with its ‘Range Rover’ lettering.
Taking a Look Inside
Heading into the interior of these models also reveals substantial differences. Although both the Evoque and Discovery Sport use a lot of the same material the Discovery Sport is much more spacious and open and has a much more airy feel to it. It has larger windows, ample headroom and a very spacious cargo area which makes it ideal for families. The Evoque in comparison has a much smaller cabin space and is also a little more restricted in the window sizes and cargo area. A lot of the design features, however are very similar with the details like window stitches and turn-signal stalks, gear selector and the infotainment systems being the same.
Technology & Built-In Features
Regardless of the differences in style the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque offer pretty much all of the same technology and built in features. Their infotainment system is the same in both models as is the automated parking system. They both have identical surround-view camera systems and they both offer their drivers fantastic technological elements such as heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, keyless entry and top-tier multi speaker systems. Although both these models are considered to be on the pricey side, when you weigh up all those features it’s actually quite cheap – check this out. So whilst both models have their own distinct style on the outside and the inside, buyers can know what to expect when it comes to the features and technology included in these two cars.
Both the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque offer a 2.0 liter, turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine that offers an impressive 240 horsepower. They both also offer a 9-speed automatic transmission and a standard all wheel drive which means that the basic mechanics are essentially the same.
The main difference therefore is within the different fuel economy of both these models. The Discovery Sport, due to its larger size, only registers 20 miles per gallon compared to the Evoques much more impressive 21 mpg in the city.
Getting the Evoque out onto the open road allows drivers to experience a nimble and nifty ride. The Evoque is generally a little quicker than the Discovery where the Discovery offers a more solid and stable driver experience. The Evoque has actually been compared, several time, to a sporty hatchback, as its turbocharged engine offers more than enough power to tackle virtually all terrains and all driving situations. As it is also smaller it also transitions well into the city and proves to be a good urban runaround.
The Discovery Sport, as mentioned above, feel much more like a more traditional and classic SUV. Although the engine is the same, the extra weight and larger size means it isn’t quite as quick on its feet as the Evoque. That doesn’t mean however that it doesn’t offer great drivability. It is still quick to accelerate, is good at taking on turns and curvy roads and offers a smooth ride and impressive brakes.
Both the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque offer an extensive range of modern safety equipment. They both provide really great standard safety features such as side airbags, anti-lock braking and backup cameras. Other features that can be invested in are multi-angle cameras, blind spot monitoring system, rear cross traffic alert and a forward collision alert with automatic braking, to name just a few. Therefore both models rank very highly indeed when it comes to their safety features and equipment.
Weighing Them Both Up
As the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque share so many different features and components, as you can see above, it is not an easy to task to weigh them both up. As they both clearly offer different advantages and features, it really comes down to the personal preference of the driver when it comes to deciding which model comes out on top. Looking at the purpose of these two great cars is the best place for anyone considering these two models. The Discovery Sport is more for the drivers who want a more spacious and open ride. The Discovery is more suited for those looking for a more traditional luxury SUV. Whilst the Evoque is more of a sleek and stylish city-slicker vehicle. A sporty and small luxury SUV that transitions from urban style into rural toughness seamlessly.
