When it comes to 4WD most of us immediately think of the big guns. The Raptor, Range Rover and maybe the Mercedes G Wagon. However, you don’t need a huge car to get the excellent handling of an all-wheel drive system. In fact, there are some fantastic smaller cars that could give your family that additional support when you need it.

The Fiat Panda 4×4 is comparable to the Dacia Duster. It is a very low price vehicle with decent off-road credentials. although tiny compared to the Duster and is a far more stylish car. Don’t let the cute exterior fool you though. This 4×4 is very practical both inside and out. You get a tiny TwinAir petrol engine which does look very efficient on paper. However, you will need to work it pretty hard to get any performance out of it. This means your fuel economy will suffer.  There is a diesel engine however with recent statements made about this form of fuel; you may find you are subject to fines in the future. In the UK, they are pushing to get rid of all diesel cars. The Panda is accomplished off the road and due to its compact nature, it is really agile.

So, a little bigger in size than the Panda, however definitely still a family car, is the Subaru Outback with raised suspension and a grippy four-wheel-drive system the Outback is extremely competent in slippery conditions and gives it the capability to take on a little off-roading. Subaru isn’t always known for their stunning looks, but this is down to the practical design, and that makes it an appeal all of its own for many. We recommend the well equipped entry-level SE Outback you get four-wheel-drive capability and 50 mpg fuel economy – as well as modern-day essentials like climate control, sat nav and an excellent range of safety equipment. As winter cars go, the Outback offers you the convenience of an estate and the feeling that no amount of inclement weather will stop you. The whole Subaru range offers 4wd so visit and get to grips with this great make.

Finally, if you want to be a little bit more sporty, then the Audi TT can be ordered with Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system. So the quick little car will be easier to control in slippery conditions. Audi is not only a remarkably strong brand, but it oozes quality inside. Audi’s latest 12.3-inch ‘virtual cockpit’ dashboard display is exceptional. The TT is available with a broad range of engines, culminating in the 306bhp TTS. You can even combine performance and economy. This is one of the best all-weather sports cars money can buy!
