If you have just had a baby, some congratulations are in order! Having a little bundle of joy is a great addition in your life. It’s nice being able to call your little one your son (or daughter) and to be able to show them off to your friends and family!
Your baby is precious and fragile. You want to make sure that they have the best start in life, and you also want to protect them from the harsh realities of life. Are you planning a road trip soon for you and your little ‘un? If so, it’s important to prepare well in advance of the journey.
Are you not sure about how best to prepare for your journey? If so, this handy guide will tell you what you need to know.
Choosing the right car seat
The first task is to make sure that you choose the right car seat for your baby. Car seats come in a variety of categories, according to a baby’s size or age. They also come in many different colours and shapes.
You can even buy car seats that also clamp onto prams. I recommend buying such a car seat as it makes life easier getting your baby in and out of the car.
As you have a newborn baby, their car seat will need to get fitted to the back seat. You must also face their seat towards the back seat of your car. In other words, they shouldn’t be sat facing the front of the car!
I urge you to buy a mirror that fits onto the rear seat head rest. It will serve two functions:
- It will keep your baby entertained if they can see themselves in the mirror;
- You can also see what they are doing by using your rear-view mirror. That is essential when you are driving, as you can’t turn your head around whilst driving on the road!
Mark from Hilton Garage says that you can also get your baby some toys to look at and play with.
Those toys are things like rattles or squeaky toys that hang from the bar of their car seat. Older babies will play with them more than newborns. But when your baby is around four to five weeks old, they will start looking and staring at things more.
Pack a lot of baby essentials
It doesn’t matter if your journey is a few minutes or a few hours long. You need to pack all your baby’s essentials, and prepare for every eventuality!
There are many things you should include in your baby’s travel bag. Examples include spare baby grows, nappies, muslin cloths, wet wipes and cotton pads.
You should also take a travel changing mat with you. They are useful when you need to change your baby’s nappy in a public place or even in the car. Most travel changing mats can fold up and get carried like a bag.
I hope you have found this information useful. Thanks for reading!
